Nitrous Oxide is a relaxing sedative that is a sweet smelling, non irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. It works fast and you come out of relaxation/sedation immediately. Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. Nitrous oxide is safe, the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide.
How does Nitrous Oxide work? The patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. You will feel very relaxed and calm, yet awake and aware of your surroundings. You will recover quickly and be able to drive yourself home.
Advantages of Sedation with Nitrous Oxide
Reasons not to use Nitrous Oxide Though there are no major contra-indications to using nitrous oxide, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
We offer several additional medications to keep you relaxed which can be used in combination with nitrous oxide or as an alternative. These medications are often taken prior to your procedure and you will always need some else to drive you to and from your appointment. You will need to discuss these options with Dr. Kindt ahead of your appointment.
