Dental Bridge vs. Implants?
Mesa, AZ

Tooth loss can happen for several different reasons.

Common causes of tooth loss include such things as gum disease, oral and facial trauma, bruxism, and more.

No matter what the reason, tooth loss is a major issue. Even the loss of just one tooth can have a serious impact on your oral health, your appearance, and your quality of life.

Eating and speaking become more difficult. Your healthy teeth may begin to shift out of their natural alignment as your jawbone begins to grow weak. This can then cause issues like uneven tooth wear and TMJ pain.

Replacing your missing teeth is important for restoring the functions and aesthetics, as well as the health, of your mouth. At Timothy H. Kindt, DDS, we can help with dental bridges and dental implants.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges have been used for several decades to replace one to three missing teeth in a given area of your mouth. There are a few different types of bridges. Fixed bridges are the most common. Typically made from ceramic, fixed bridges consist of your replacement teeth set between two dental crowns. The crowns are used to anchor the bridge in place, using adjacent healthy teeth for support.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges have a few benefits, including such things as:
•  The process for getting a bridge is fairly straightforward, and it only takes two visits to complete.
•  You only require a local anesthetic, which is applied when we remove the enamel from the teeth that will hold the bridge in place.
•  Bridges are one of the more affordable options for replacing missing teeth.

There are also a few disadvantages to bridges as well, such as:
•  We need to remove enamel from perfectly healthy teeth for the bridge to fit properly into place.
•  A bridge may replace missing teeth, but it cannot stop the bone loss that occurs in the jaw. For this reason, it may become necessary to replace your bridge over time.

What Are Implants?

Dental implants are a more recent option for replacing missing teeth and require a surgical procedure for placement. Implants consist of a few different components. The implant itself is a small, titanium rod, which is inserted into the jawbone. Bone fuses to the titanium as you heal, essentially turning the implant into a root that then supports your new teeth. An abutment, or connector, is placed on top of the implant. Finally, replacement teeth, typically ceramic crowns, are screwed in place on top. Depending upon your specific circumstances, and how many teeth you are missing, you may need only one implant to support your new teeth, or you may require several.

Pros and Cons of Implants

Implants have several benefits:
•  We do not need to alter your adjacent teeth in any way.
•  Implants are more comfortable. Your teeth are supported by the titanium rods instead of your adjacent teeth.
•  Because implants stimulate the jawbone similarly to the way natural teeth do, they help to stop the bone loss that typically follows tooth loss. This helps to maintain the integrity of your jawbone.

While implants have numerous benefits, they also do have a few downsides:
•  They are one of the most expensive tooth replacement options.
•  Implants require a surgical procedure.
•  The more implants that are needed, the longer healing can take. In many cases, healing can take several months.
