Crown Lengthening Mesa AZ

Gorgeous female patient showing off her wonderful smile after getting a crown lengthening procedure at Timothy H. Kindt, DDS in Mesa, AZ Do your gums sit too low on your teeth? Are you happy with the condition of your teeth, but still self-conscious of your smile?

If so, you're not alone. Many people think that the perfect smile consists of straight, white, well-aligned teeth, but that is only one component. Your gums also play a critical role in the aesthetic of your smile.

Luckily, the experts here at Timothy H. Kindt, DDS can help you achieve your perfect smile with a cosmetic dentistry procedure called crown lengthening.

What Is a Crown Lengthening Procedure?

An aesthetic gum lift, also called crown lengthening, gum contouring or gum reshaping, is a cosmetic dental procedure that evens out your gum line. By removing excess gum tissue, your teeth are made to look bigger and more natural. Sometimes, a small amount of bone is removed as well.

Most gum lift procedures are performed on a cosmetic basis. However, there are several exceptions. Gum contouring may be necessary to trim tissue growing over a tooth crown. Gum lifts can be used to fill a cavity occurring on the gum line. Gum contouring can even be used to add tissue where the gums have receded during periodontal disease.

Cosmetic Procedure - Fixing a "Gummy Smile"

A crown lengthening treatment is all about fixing "gummy" smiles, or a smile where your gums are overshadowing your teeth. You might have a gummy smile because of genetics, or because a medication or health condition caused receding gums. This can make your teeth look uneven, crooked, and not long enough, even if they are in perfect condition. An excessively gummy smile can be distracting when you speak or smile. That is when you need an aesthetic gum lift.

Making Room for Dental Restorations

During a gum lift treatment, we carefully contour your gums to frame your teeth in a way that improves the overall aesthetics of your entire smile. By removing excessive tissue, we can ensure that your gums help to complement the particular shape of your teeth.

The effects of a gum lift are immediately noticeable, and when used alongside other procedures like veneers, bonding, and tooth crowns can truly transform your smile into a work of art.

Am I a Candidate for a Crown Lengthening Procedure?

Crown lengthening is ideal for anyone suffering from receding gums or who otherwise has a gummy smile. This procedure is also a great choice for anyone looking to receive multiple cosmetic treatments as part of a complete smile makeover. An attractive gum line can help even the nicest looking teeth shine brighter.

Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for an aesthetic gum lift. You need to have good oral health to be an ideal candidate, which means no gum disease or other periodontal health complications.

Crown Lengthening FAQ's

How Long Does Crown Lengthening Take?

This procedure will generally take two appointments to complete.

An evaluation is done at the first appointment where we will take x-rays and map out a plan for how the procedure will go. Measurements and bite impressions are completed before scheduling the second appointment. When the second office visit comes, we will perform the actual gum lift following the treatment plan.

One of the technologies utilized in a gum lift is called digital smile design (DSD). This allows staff to completely map out where the new gum line should be and determine the best placement for the patient's new smile.

With the digital smile design, we are able to show the patient what their smile will look like before we begin the procedure and show them how it will appear once the procedure is finished. It is important to match the gum line to the patient's facial structure. The DSD images can be manipulated while viewing so the patient can be comfortable with the end result.

This procedure is considered non-invasive and utilizes another new technology to perform called a soft tissue laser. Once, gum lifts were surgical procedures that many patients found uncomfortable, and could require sutures and lengthy recovery periods. Not so with modern gum lifts. Today we use advanced soft tissue diode lasers that not only dramatically reduce any potential discomfort, but are also much faster. As the laser shapes your gums it also cauterizes the blood vessels, meaning no mess and no stitches.

Our dental experts can use the ultra-precise beam to transform your gum line better than any scalpel ever could. And when we are done, you are good to go - the soft tissue laser practically eliminates the recovery period.

A big benefit of using laser technology is the lowered rate of infection. Because the laser seals and cauterizes the tissue as it performs the procedure there is an extremely low risk of infection. It also kills bacterial infections on the spot.

Is Crown Lengthening Painful?

After the procedure, you will likely have some pain and swelling at the site. Rest and limit activity for a few days, and take over the counter analgesics such as Tylenol or Advil for pain. Do not take aspirin, as this can increase your risk of bleeding.

What and When Can I Eat After a Crown Lengthening?

You should eat soft, cool foods such as ice cream, eggs and yogurt, and avoid spicy food and seeds for at least the first few days after your procedure.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Crown Lengthening?

Since there are no stitches involved in gum lifting, you will be able to eat and drink within 24 hours. However, you need to avoid consuming hard foods that can aggravate your gums. Your gums are expected to heal completely within one week.

Our doctors will advise you to use a gentle mouthwash and soft-bristled brushes that can effectively keep your teeth clean without stinging your gums. This can also help reduce the chances of infection. If you experience any excessive bleeding or an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, please give us a call.

Do Gums Grow Back After Crown Lengthening?

An aesthetic gum lift is a minor oral surgery with a high rate of success. However, like any surgical procedure, it comes with risks. Potential complications of crown lengthening include bleeding, infection, allergic reaction to anesthetic (rare) and relapse of gum tissue.
